Frequently Asekd Questions From New Toyota Buyers

New Toyota Buyer Questions, Answered

If you are buying your first new Toyota, most of what you need to know falls into four buckets: what to bring, what Maine charges you, how the money is arranged, and what is covered once you drive away. These are the twelve questions new buyers ask us most often at 181 New County Road in Thomaston, and the answers are written for people registering a vehicle in Maine. Two things surprise people more than anything else here. Maine charges a 5.5% sales tax on the purchase price, and we collect that at the store — but the larger first-year bill for most buyers is the municipal excise tax, which we do not collect at all. That one is paid at your own town office, in Thomaston or Rockland or Camden or wherever you live, and it is figured on the vehicle TSRP rather than on what you paid. Knowing that before you sign is the difference between a smooth first week of ownership and an unwelcome surprise at the town clerk window.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring with me to buy a new Toyota?

Bring a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and your trade title if you’re trading a vehicle you own outright. That’s the short list, and it covers most transactions. A few situations need more. If there is still a loan on your trade, bring your account number and the lender name so we can request a payoff figure. Financing? Bring a recent pay stub — some lenders ask for proof of income, and having it in hand saves a return trip. Buying in a business name means bringing the paperwork showing you can sign for it. One item people forget: if you are transferring plates from a vehicle you already own, bring the current registration. Maine lets you carry a registration over to a replacement vehicle, and there is usually a credit for excise tax you have already paid. Without the registration in hand, that is harder to sort out on the same day.

What can I take care of before I come to the store?

Four things, and you can do all of them from home: get an estimate on your trade, get pre-qualified for financing, run payment scenarios, and pick out the vehicle you want to drive. Doing those first changes the visit substantially. A buyer who arrives with a trade estimate and a pre-qualification is usually here for a test drive and a signature rather than an afternoon of paperwork. If you are cross-shopping a hybrid against a gas model, tell us before you arrive, and we’ll have both ready to drive back to back, which is the comparison that settles the question. What we can’t do in advance is the registration. Maine routes new-vehicle registration through your municipal office, so the excise tax step happens on your side after the sale. We’ll walk you through exactly what to hand the clerk.

How does Shepard Toyota set the price on a new Toyota?

A new Toyota starts from the manufacturer suggested retail price on the window sticker, adjusted by any factory incentive Toyota is running on that model at that time. The window sticker itself — the Monroney label — is a federal requirement, and it lists the base price, every factory option, the destination charge, and the fuel economy rating. It is the same document your town will ask to see when you register the vehicle, because Maine excise tax is included in the TSRP. So it’s worth keeping rather than tossing in the glove box. Factory incentives change monthly and vary by model, trim and sometimes by region, which is why we publish current offers rather than fixed numbers on a page like this one. College graduates and military members have separate Toyota rebate programs with their own eligibility rules. Our pre-owned vehicles are priced on a different method entirely, which we explain on our market-based pricing page.

Can you get a Toyota that is not on your lot?

Yes. We carry the full Toyota lineup on the lot, and when the exact one you want is not sitting on it, we go and find it for you. That happens one of two ways. Either we locate the vehicle at another Toyota store and bring it here, or we work with the factory to order it built the way you want it. Which route makes sense depends on what you are after, and sorting that out is our job rather than yours. Tell us the two or three things that genuinely matter — the trim, the color, the package you do not want to give up — and the ones you are flexible on. From there it is on us, and we will keep you posted along the way.

What taxes and fees will I pay on a new vehicle in Maine?

Maine charges a 5.5% sales tax on the purchase price, a municipal excise tax figured on the vehicle TSRP, a $35 annual registration fee for a passenger plate, and a $33 title application fee. Only the first is collected at the dealership. The column that matters most in the table below is the middle one. Two of these charges are ours to collect and remit, and two of them are paid at your town office, which is why your total out-the-door figure at the store is not the whole first-year cost of putting the vehicle on the road.

Maine does not add a local or county sales tax on top of the 5.5%, and the rate is the same in every town in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties. The state also does not currently charge an extra annual registration surcharge on battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, which a majority of states now do. A Toyota hybrid, plug-in hybrid or bZ registered in Maine pays the same $35 passenger registration as a gas Corolla.

How does Maine excise tax work?

Excise tax is an annual town tax for the privilege of using a vehicle on public roads. You pay it at the town office where you live rather than at the dealership, and it is based on the vehicle sticker price rather than on what you paid for it. In the first year it works out to roughly $24 for every $1,000 of sticker price, and the rate steps down every year after that, so the bill gets smaller as the vehicle gets older. Your town will ask to see the window sticker the first time you register a new vehicle, and we send that with you so you have it at the counter. Rates, credits and exemptions are all set by state law and administered by your own town, so your town clerk is the right person for an exact figure before you budget around it. Thomaston, Rockland, Camden, Warren, and Waldoboro all work from the same state schedule.

Does a trade-in lower the sales tax I pay in Maine?

Yes. When you trade a vehicle toward the purchase of another vehicle, Maine charges the 5.5% sales tax only on the difference between the sale price and the trade-in allowance. The arithmetic is straightforward. On a $38,000 vehicle with a $14,000 trade allowance, the tax applies to $24,000, which is $1,320 rather than $2,090. The trade is worth $770 more to you than the same amount in cash from a private sale, before you count the time a private sale takes. Two limits are worth knowing, because they are the parts most often stated wrong. The credit applies only when you trade an item of the same kind — a vehicle toward a vehicle. Trading a boat or a trailer toward a car earns no sales tax credit in Maine, and the tax applies to the full purchase price. And the credit does not apply to a lease, unless the lease is structured as a lease in lieu of purchase. The tax is also figured before manufacturer rebates are applied, so a factory cash rebate lowers what you pay but not what you are taxed on.

How does financing through the dealership work?

Your credit application goes to a group of lenders, including Toyota Financial Services and several regional banks and credit unions, and they come back with the terms each can offer. What determines the offers is mostly outside anyone at the store: your credit history, the amount financed relative to the vehicle value, the term length you want, and whatever rate environment the lenders are working in that month. Toyota also runs special financing rates on selected models. The term for this is a subvented rate, and it means Toyota itself is covering part of the interest cost rather than the lender charging you the full market rate. Because Toyota funds it, it applies only to the models Toyota has chosen to support, and the list changes month to month. That is why a rate advertised on one vehicle may not carry across to another one on the same lot, and it is worth asking which models carry a supported rate while you are still deciding. Term length is worth a conversation before you sign. A longer term lowers the monthly payment and costs more in total interest; a shorter one does the reverse. Ask us to put the options side by side, and you can see the difference in both numbers before you pick the one that suits you. You can start the process before you visit by getting pre-qualified, which gives you a working range without a full application.

Does applying with more than one lender hurt my credit?

Not the way most people fear. The major credit scoring models treat multiple auto loan inquiries made within a short shopping window as a single inquiry, so shopping several lenders for one vehicle purchase does not multiply the impact on your score. The window varies by scoring model, and it is generally two to six weeks. The practical guidance that follows is simple: do your rate shopping in a concentrated stretch rather than spreading it across several months. When we submit one application to several lenders on the same day, that de-duplication is exactly the behavior it was designed for. Pre-qualification is a separate matter. It typically uses a soft inquiry, which doesn’t affect your score at all, and it gives you a realistic range before any hard inquiry happens.

What warranty comes with a new Toyota?

Every new Toyota carries a 36-month or 36,000-mile basic limited warranty and a 60-month or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, whichever comes first in each case. Corrosion perforation coverage runs 60 months with unlimited mileage. Hybrid and electrified models carry more. Hybrid-related components, including the battery control module, the hybrid control module and the inverter with converter, are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. The hybrid battery itself is covered for 10 years from the date of first use or 150,000 miles on 2020 and newer model years. For a household in Knox or Waldo County putting real winter miles on a RAV4 Hybrid or a Highlander Hybrid, that battery term is the number worth writing down. Toyota EV drive components on battery electric models are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, and that coverage includes the traction battery falling below 70% of its original capacity. Coverage terms are subject to the conditions in the Warranty and Maintenance Guide that comes with the vehicle, and specific coverages vary under federal and California regulations.

What happens on delivery day?

You sign the sale documents and the title application, we hand over the plates or the transfer paperwork, and then your sales associate sits in the vehicle with you and sets it up. That setup is the part worth not rushing. Your sales associate pairs your phone, sets the driver profile and mirrors, walks through the Toyota Safety Sense features so you know what the vehicle will do on its own and what it won’t, and shows you where the maintenance schedule lives in the owner materials. On a hybrid or plug-in, charging and the drive modes get covered as well. You leave with the Monroney window sticker, your bill of sale, the title application paperwork, and the excise tax documentation for your town office. Then the last step is yours: take that paperwork to your municipal office in Thomaston, Rockland, Warren, Waldoboro or wherever you live, pay the excise tax, and complete the registration. Your sales associate will go through exactly what the clerk needs before you leave the lot.

What does ToyotaCare include on a 2027 Toyota?

ToyotaCare is the no-cost scheduled maintenance plan included with every new Toyota, and the coverage term depends on the model year of the vehicle you buy. On 2027 models it covers factory scheduled maintenance for 1 year or 10,000 miles. On 2026 and earlier models it covers 2 years or 25,000 miles. This is worth asking about by name, because both model years are on lots across the country right now and the terms are genuinely different. Roadside assistance runs 2 years with unlimited mileage on most models, and 3 years on Prius, Mirai, and Toyota battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The Mirai carries an enhanced maintenance term of 3 years or 35,000 miles. Here is the tradeoff to plan around rather than discover later. On a 2027 model, 10,000 miles is roughly two services, and a Midcoast driver commuting to Rockland or Belfast can reach that inside a year. Scheduled maintenance doesn’t stop being necessary when the included plan ends; it just moves onto your budget. ToyotaCare Plus extends the coverage, and it’s cheaper to add at the time of purchase than to sort out later. Our ToyotaCare page lists the specific services each visit includes.
